About the product

Inspired by the heroic beginnings of mountaineering and the legendary expeditions of the early 20th century, we created our style icon "Henry" in 2014. Due to high demand, we are now following up in 2024 with the children's version "Henry Junior" - developed for young adventurers between 6 and 12 years old.

Just like its big role model, "Henry Junior" also impresses with its lovingly crafted details: lightly padded, adjustable straps that adapt to every growth spurt, and a high-quality quilted, lightly padded back for maximum wearing comfort. The interior of the children's backpack offers a spacious main compartment, ideal for everything that young explorers need on their excursions, as well as a secure compartment for valuables in the front area. The tablet compartment for iPads and tablets up to 11" is especially practical. The side exterior pockets with closures provide additional storage space for small items.

The craftsmanship of "Henry Junior" is in no way inferior to the original. All wear points are externally trimmed with leather, stress points additionally reinforced. The back is not just padded but also elaborately quilted, turning the canvas backpack into not just a practical item but also a small piece of art. The bottom is completely made of leather, giving the children's backpack a sturdy base to master every adventure.

We are Daniel and Christoph and live our dream. We founded DRAKENSBERG because we want to inspire people to recognize the true value of travel and to strive for it.

To understand the path as the true goal and to grow on it. A good journey means learning. About life and about yourself. We know that a good journey can change a whole life. Our travel bags are silent reminders of the travel spirit of the 19th and 20th century, when traveling was still an adventure and travelers were adventurers.

Handmade

Maybe you have already noticed, our bags are different. Each product is an elaborately manufactured unique piece with its own little story. The bags are almost completely handmade. We only use high quality leather and natural materials. Paying attention to sustainability and environment.

Leather is a natural material and can have small irregularities. Each leather product is also patinated by hand. This elaborate process makes our products trademarked. No bag can be exactly same as another. Thus, small colour deviations are unfortunately unavoidable and are not a sign of poor quality, but uniqueness.

To be as authentic as possible, we exclusively use materials that were used 100 years ago, minimizing the use of plastics and chemicals. Unfortunately, our standard canvas backpack is neither waterproof nor water-resistant. However, it can withstand a brief rain shower. Alternatively, the backpack can be impregnated for water resistance.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Can the "Henry Junior" olive-green be made waterproof afterwards?</b></h3> <p>The backpack can be easily impregnated afterward using a standard, colorless waterproofing spray (e.g., Impru00e4gnol). Alternatively, waterproofing wax can also be used (e.g., Dr. Gee's Waterproofing Wax). Just note that the color and texture of the bag may change. It is best to test the impregnation on the backside first.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>How can I clean and maintain my "Henry Junior" olive-green?</b></h3> <p>We believe that a vintage-design backpack should show signs of extensive use. That's exactly how it should be. This particularly robust leather originates from India. During production, our leather is additionally hand-finished with colored wax based on carnauba, giving it its unique vintage patina. It perfectly complements our cotton canvas.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Where and how is the "Henry Junior" olive-green kid's backpack made?</b></h3> <p>Our goods are manufactured in India. Our manufacturing unit is a small family business whose long-standing employees craft our bags with a lot of heart and passion. A genuine friendship has grown out of our long-term collaboration. The production conditions are socially acceptable and meet BSCI standards. We regularly personally ensure this. Our leather and cotton fabrics come directly from local sources in India. In dyeing our cotton fabrics, we only use dyes that are free from AZO dyes. Our leathers are fundamentally vegetable-tanned, meaning plant-based and without the use of aggressive tanning agents. Our standards are socially and ecologically justifiable and above average. However, it is our ambition to continue to improve our ecological and social "footprint."</p>




Our leather production is LWG certified

Our leather tannery is certified to the LWG standard and we use only vegetable tanning agents for tanning. The Leather Working Group (LWG) is an initiative to make conditions in tanneries and intermediaries more transparent and to bring about sustainable change. To implement its goals, the Leather Working Group has developed an audit protocol for sustainable and responsible leather production.
