Our premium leather travel bags are based on the design of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These design eras continue to influence the design of leather goods to this day. Which travel bag is the best?

DRAKENSBERG travel bags are anything but ordinary. Sustainability is not a marketing element for us, but a design element. We are concerned with authentic products that could have been produced in a similar form 200 years ago. After all, plastic has only been around since the middle of the 19th century (1862).

There is currently no travel bag manufacturer that we can look up to. Even the biggest brands in the industry still rely exclusively on classic chrome tanning. Many manufacturers change the surface of the leather in their designs or suggest a higher material thickness by using plastic lamination. The term natural leather is also being used a lot, but is rarely accurate. It is often about uniformity, more appearance than substance.

In the 21st century, a good travel bag should convey a good and honest feeling and should not make empty promises. We avoid using plastics as much as possible in the production of our travel bags. Our leather or canvas is not laminated with plastic. Our outer fabrics do not contain any plastic fibers. We do not even use nylon or polyester for the inner lining. The leather used is sustainably vegetable tanned, even if not completely free of chrome.

How big does a travel bag have to be?

Depending on the intended use, a length between 55 and 60 cm is ideal. Travel bags of this size have a storage volume of between 40 and 60 liters. When it comes to storage space, we recommend the rule of thumb of 10 liters per day of travel. A travel bag with 40 liters should therefore be sufficient for 3-4 days. If flexibility in terms of storage space is important, we recommend our "Sam" travel bag. This has a volume extension and can be expanded by around 10 liters in just a few steps. Our range also includes other models that can be expanded on the side.

Does a travel bag count as hand luggage when traveling by plane?

A travel bag is ideal as hand luggage for travelling by plane. However, you should check the airline's regulations before departure. Small travel bags up to a size of 55 x 35 x 25cm should generally not be a problem. The information in our shop always corresponds to the maximum dimensions. If a travel bag is not filled to the limit, a large part of our range should also be suitable as hand luggage.

However, it is not just the size that is important, but also the weight. Many airlines allow a maximum weight of 8kg.

Which travel bag for 1 week?

For holidays of up to a week, a travel bag with a volume of 60 liters should be sufficient. You can find a large selection in all sizes in our shop.

Are travel bags suitable as checked baggage on flights?

Yes, travel bags can be suitable as checked luggage when traveling by air. When using a travel bag as checked luggage, it is advisable to look for durable materials and a sturdy construction to ensure the protection of your personal belongings during transport. It is also advisable to protect and organize the contents of travel bags accordingly. Use packing cubes or other organizational solutions to keep your items organized and minimize potential damage.

Always make sure that the weight of your travel bag complies with the airline's checked baggage regulations to avoid additional charges.

Which travel bag for 2 weeks?

For trips lasting 2 weeks, a travel bag for men and women is no longer the best choice. A suitcase with a storage volume of 80-100 liters would make more sense. Unless the circumstances of the trip allow you space for 2 pieces of luggage, then 2 travel bags with a volume of 40-60 liters would be conceivable. For example, a vacation by car. Ultimately, there is no "better" or "worse" between a suitcase and a travel bag. It all depends on your individual needs, the purpose of the trip and your personal preferences. Some travelers even prefer a combination of both, using a suitcase as checked luggage and taking a travel bag as hand luggage. In the end, the choice is also a question of money, as high-quality suitcases are often significantly more expensive than good travel bags.
