FAQs
Without luggage, a good trip is hardly possible
As a manufacturer of leather goods, we are fascinated by the symbolism of luggage. The sight of a travel bag or suitcase can trigger wanderlust in us like nothing else. The history of travel is thus irreversibly linked to the history of luggage. The selection of the right piece of luggage is always based on the choice of means of travel, even today.
While in the past it was often wardrobe suitcases or chests that were used for ship and train journeys, with the development of the airplane and the automobile the need arose for smaller and more compact pieces of luggage, such as suitcases, travel bags and backpacks.
What is meant by luggage?
Luggage refers to the protective and transport containers for everyday items that you take with you when you travel. Anyone who has ever experienced transport damage or even the loss of a piece of luggage knows the importance of good luggage. Luggage includes suitcases, travel bags and all bags that can be carried on the body, such as backpacks and bum bags. Suitcases and trolleys, garment bags or travel bags are used to transport clothing or larger items. Cosmetics and personal care products are usually stored in a toiletry bag or beauty case. A travel wallet or purse is ideal for documents and means of payment.
What luggage should you have?
No two trips are the same. Therefore, the choice of luggage depends on the type of trip. For check-in luggage or checked luggage, we recommend using trolley suitcases that are as robust and light as possible, or made of polycarbonate or aluminum. 2 suitcases are perfectly sufficient here: size M - height approx. 65cm, approx. 60 liters and size L - height approx. 75cm, approx. 80 liters. In addition to the suitcases, we recommend a backpack as hand luggage, which can also be used for excursions at the destination. This backpack should have lockable inner compartments for valuables and, if necessary, a padded laptop compartment. For a weekend trip, short vacation and additional hand luggage, we recommend using a travel bag. This practical piece of luggage is more versatile than a suitcase and can also be used as a sports bag, for example.
What is the best travel luggage?
We recommend using suitcases as check-in luggage for Fügen. As a rule of thumb, a trolley suitcase of size M (60 liters) is sufficient for trips of up to 7 days. For trips of one week or more, size L (80 liters) is recommended. You should definitely use a suitcase scale to measure exactly whether the weight of the filled suitcase is below the maximum permitted weight per piece of luggage. You should therefore definitely check in advance how many pieces of luggage can be checked in per person and how heavy these travel companions can be. These requirements can differ for short and long-haul flights.
Which piece of luggage for short trips up to 7 days?
For trips of less than 7 days, a travel bag or weekender can also be considered as a companion. This is especially true if the accompanying luggage is not to be checked in. However, with a travel bag, the relevant guidelines for hand luggage must be observed. This means not only the dimensions but also the weight. The parameters can vary from country to country and from airline to airline. For short trips or trips by car, we always recommend using a travel bag or weekender, as suitcases are often too bulky and impractical.
What luggage can I take on the plane?
Unfortunately, there are no uniform regulations for the category, number, size and weight of hand luggage. This information should be requested directly from the airline, also with regard to the destination. Different guidelines may apply for short trips than for long-haul flights. However, a maximum size for hand luggage of 55 x 35 x 26cm and a maximum weight of 8kg are accepted by most airlines. This means that travel bags and backpacks are particularly suitable as cabin luggage.
In general, we recommend only taking the bare essentials with you when travelling. Nothing is more of a hindrance when travelling than large amounts of luggage. This is especially true if some of the things you take with you remain unused at the end of the trip. In addition, the risk of loss or damage increases with each additional item.
It is better to pack cleverly and allow enough time to prepare well for the trip.
What is not allowed in hand luggage when travelling by plane?
Since September 11, 2001, the security requirements for luggage at most airports have become significantly stricter. There are a few things to consider. The following items are not allowed in hand luggage (especially before security checks): liquids in containers of more than 100ml and a total of more than 1000ml of liquid, knives, scissors, nail files, razor blades (if the blade is longer than 6cm), thermometers with mercury, walking sticks, knitting needles, objects that could be used as weapons (e.g. golf clubs), chemical, poisonous, flammable and explosive substances.
What absolutely has to be in your hand luggage on flights?
All valuables such as travel documents, passport, money, keys and cell phones must be packed in your cabin luggage. In addition, all lithium-ion batteries or power banks and all devices with large batteries such as laptops or tablets must be packed in your hand luggage.
What other recommendations are there for carry-on luggage?
When travelling, comfort and personal needs should not be neglected. Therefore, we recommend the following things for air travel: charging cables for laptops and cell phones, valuable cameras, glasses and glasses accessories, sleeping masks and earplugs, medication, hygiene products and a good book. Here is our book tip: “The Cafe on the Edge of the World” by John Strelecky. There are useful travel organisers for this, so your hand luggage stays tidy and organised.
Special tips for optimizing your hand luggage:
Use a travel bag as hand luggage, ideally a travel bag that can be expanded. This way you can also use small gaps in the overhead cupboards in the aircraft cabin and expand your luggage if necessary. A travel bag also offers a lot of space and options for optimizing the weight of your checked luggage.
Ideally, you should keep your cosmetics and hygiene products in a small transparent toiletry bag. This saves time at security checks. Regardless of the time of year, you should always have a woolen scarf or a light down jacket with you. You can use this either against strong air conditioning or as a pillow.
Attach a luggage tag to each piece of luggage that contains your address and contact details. This way, your luggage can be clearly identified.
