About the product

Until the beginning of the 20th century, seafaring was the only real option for long-distance travel. The exploration of our planet would also have been unthinkable without seafaring. Ship names such as Endeavour, Victoria or Santa Maria will probably forever stand for the greatest ventures in human history. Like hardly any other piece of luggage, the duffel bag stands as a symbol for this spirit of discovery and heroism.

Our duffel bag »Robin« is modelled on the iconic shape of the classic duffel bag and further developed with practical details. »Robin« can also be worn like a backpack thanks to the split back strap. However, the special strengths of this unusual sea bag lie in its flexibility and low weight. Especially when there is little space and little weight to carry. For valuables such as wallets, smartphones or writing utensils, there are two practical zipped compartments on the sides.

The duffel bag has a high quality finish. All wear points are lined with leather on the outside. All stress points are additionally reinforced. The underside of the bag is completely made of leather.

Our story

We are Daniel and Christoph and live our dream. We founded DRAKENSBERG because we want to inspire people to recognize the true value of travel and to strive for it.

To understand the path as the true goal and to grow on it. A good journey means learning. About life and about yourself. We know that a good journey can change a whole life. Our travel bags are silent reminders of the travel spirit of the 19th and 20th century, when traveling was still an adventure and travelers were adventurers.

Handmade

Maybe you have already noticed, our bags are different. Each product is an elaborately manufactured unique piece with its own little story. The bags are almost completely handmade. We only use high quality leather and natural materials. Paying attention to sustainability and environment.

Leather is a natural material and can have small irregularities. Each leather product is also patinated by hand. This elaborate process makes our products trademarked. No bag can be exactly same as another. Thus, small colour deviations are unfortunately unavoidable and are not a sign of poor quality, but uniqueness.

However, we have not encountered any issues taking it onboard as a backpack, provided it is not fully packed. It's best to consult the ground staff beforehand.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Is the Duffel Bag "Robin", olive-green rigid or rather soft?</b></h3> <p>Our canvas and leather duffel bag falls under the category of soft luggage and is partially made of soft cotton-canvas in olive-green. Therefore, its shape alters depending on how much it is filled. The advantage is that the vintage duffel bag can be more easily stowed away when not in use. We deliberately avoid using plastic lining that would give it a rigid form.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Is the Duffel Bag "Robin", olive-green waterproof or water-resistant?</b></h3> <p>The canvas and leather duffel bag is designed after the classic maritime duffel bags of the 19th century. To remain as authentic as possible, we only use materials that would have been used 100 years ago and avoid plastics and chemicals as much as possible. Unfortunately, our canvas duffel bag is not waterproof or water-resistant in its standard version. However, a short rain shower should not harm our bags. Alternatively, the duffel bag can be impregnated against moisture.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Can the Duffel Bag "Robin", olive-green be made waterproof later?</b></h3> <p>The duffel bag with backpack functionality can be easily impregnated afterwards, using a standard and colorless impregnating spray (e.g., Impru00e4gnol). Our manufacturing facility is a small family-run business whose long-term employees craft our bags with great heart and passion. Our long collaboration has grown into a true friendship. The production conditions are socially responsible and comply with BSCI standards. We regularly ensure this in person. Our leather and cotton fabrics are sourced locally from India. For the dyeing of our cotton fabrics, we exclusively use dyes that are free from AZO colors. Our leathers are generally vegetable-tanned, meaning plant-based and without the use of aggressive tanning agents. Our standards are socially and ecologically responsible and above average. However, it is our goal to continue to work on ourselves and further improve our ecological and social "footprint".</p>




Our leather production is LWG certified

Our leather tannery is certified to the LWG standard and we use only vegetable tanning agents for tanning. The Leather Working Group (LWG) is an initiative to make conditions in tanneries and intermediaries more transparent and to bring about sustainable change. To implement its goals, the Leather Working Group has developed an audit protocol for sustainable and responsible leather production.
