About the product

In our search for the archetype of the backpack, we inevitably ended up at the beginnings of professional mountaineering. Especially the spectacular first ascents at the beginning of the 20th century cast a spell over us. These expeditions would have been unimaginable without reliable equipment. Backpack »Henry« is our tribute to the heroes of mountaineering and an authentic replica of these masterpieces of the bag maker's art. »Henry« is by far our most elaborate bag. But it is precisely the many small details that give this bag seriousness. As a respect to the eternal heroes and inspiration for new ones.

The rucksack has two lightly padded and adjustable shoulder straps. The back of the backpack has high-quality stitching and is lightly padded for more carrying comfort. Inside there is a large compartment in which a 13" laptop or tablet computer can be safely stored. In the front area there is an additional lockable compartment for valuables. On the outside, there are closeable pockets on each side.

The backpack has a high quality finish. All wear points are lined with leather on the outside. All stress points are additionally reinforced. The back is padded and elaborately stitched. The underside of the masterpiece is completely made of leather.

We are Daniel and Christoph and live our dream. We founded DRAKENSBERG because we want to inspire people to recognize the true value of travel and to strive for it.

To understand the path as the true goal and to grow on it. A good journey means learning. About life and about yourself. We know that a good journey can change a whole life. Our travel bags are silent reminders of the travel spirit of the 19th and 20th century, when traveling was still an adventure and travelers were adventurers.

Handmade

Maybe you have already noticed, our bags are different. Each product is an elaborately manufactured unique piece with its own little story. The bags are almost completely handmade. We only use high quality leather and natural materials. Paying attention to sustainability and environment.

Leather is a natural material and can have small irregularities. Each leather product is also patinated by hand. This elaborate process makes our products trademarked. No bag can be exactly same as another. Thus, small colour deviations are unfortunately unavoidable and are not a sign of poor quality, but uniqueness.

The backpack serves as ideal carry-on luggage for almost any mode of transportation.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Is the "Henry" olive-green backpack rigid or rather soft?</b></h3> <p>Our canvas backpack falls under the category of soft luggage and is partly made of soft cotton-canvas in olive-green. Therefore, the shape changes somewhat depending on how full it is. The advantage is that this vintage backpack can be stored more easily when not in use. We consciously avoid using plastic lining that would make the form rigid.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Is the Canvas Backpack "Henry," olive-green waterproof or water-resistant?</b></h3> <p>The backpack, made of canvas and leather, is designed after the classic mountain or hunting backpacks of the 19th century. To be as authentic as possible, we exclusively use materials that were used 100 years ago, minimizing the use of plastics and chemicals. Unfortunately, our standard canvas backpack is neither waterproof nor water-resistant. However, it can withstand a brief rain shower. Alternatively, the backpack can be impregnated for water resistance.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Can the "Henry" olive-green backpack be made waterproof afterwards?</b></h3> <p>The backpack can be easily impregnated afterward using a standard, colorless waterproofing spray (e.g., Impru00e4gnol). Alternatively, waterproofing wax can also be used (e.g., Dr. Gee's Waterproofing Wax). Just note that the color and texture of the bag may change. It is best to test the impregnation on the backside first.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>How can I clean and maintain my "Henry" olive-green backpack?</b></h3> <p>We believe that a vintage-design backpack should show signs of extensive use. That's exactly how it should be. Should you still feel the need to clean your bag, we recommend the following three steps:</p> <ul> <li>Remove dust and dirt particles from the backpack, for example, with a brush or handheld vacuum cleaner.</li> <li>Gently dab and rub stains with a clean, damp cloth. If the stains are stubborn, you might want to try a mild soap solution.</li> <li>Occasionally lightly grease the leather (e.g., leather care with beeswax or carnauba wax). Be careful not to get the canvas, to avoid stains.</li> </ul> <p></p> <h3><b>What type of leather is used for the "Henry" olive-green backpack?</b></h3> <p>We exclusively use vegetable-tanned and full-grain buffalo leather for the backpack. This particularly robust leather originates from India. During production, our leather is additionally hand-finished with colored wax based on carnauba, giving it its unique vintage patina. It perfectly complements our cotton canvas.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Where and how is the "Henry" olive-green backpack made?</b></h3> <p>Our goods are manufactured in India. Our manufacturing unit is a small family business whose long-standing employees craft our bags with a lot of heart and passion. A genuine friendship has grown out of our long-term collaboration. The production conditions are socially acceptable and meet BSCI standards. We regularly personally ensure this. Our leather and cotton fabrics come directly from local sources in India. In dyeing our cotton fabrics, we only use dyes that are free from AZO dyes. Our leathers are fundamentally vegetable-tanned, meaning plant-based and without the use of aggressive tanning agents. Our standards are socially and ecologically justifiable and above average. However, it is our ambition to continue to improve our ecological and social "footprint."</p>




Our leather production is LWG certified

Our leather tannery is certified to the LWG standard and we use only vegetable tanning agents for tanning. The Leather Working Group (LWG) is an initiative to make conditions in tanneries and intermediaries more transparent and to bring about sustainable change. To implement its goals, the Leather Working Group has developed an audit protocol for sustainable and responsible leather production.
