»Nala« is our minimalist canvas backpack with an urban design - simple, functional, and versatile. This backpack intentionally eliminates everything unnecessary, focusing on what truly matters. As a result, it is exceptionally lightweight and can be easily stored when not in use.

Inside, we have incorporated a laptop compartment and an additional zippered pocket to keep things organized.

The bag is meticulously crafted with reinforced stress points for durability and longevity.

Our story

We are Daniel and Christoph and live our dream. We founded DRAKENSBERG because we want to inspire people to recognize the true value of travel and to strive for it.

To understand the path as the true goal and to grow on it. A good journey means learning. About life and about yourself. We know that a good journey can change a whole life. Our travel bags are silent reminders of the travel spirit of the 19th and 20th century, when traveling was still an adventure and travelers were adventurers.

Handmade

Maybe you have already noticed, our bags are different. Each product is an elaborately manufactured unique piece with its own little story. The bags are almost completely handmade. We only use high quality leather and natural materials. Paying attention to sustainability and environment.

Leather is a natural material and can have small irregularities. Each leather product is also patinated by hand. This elaborate process makes our products trademarked. No bag can be exactly same as another. Thus, small colour deviations are unfortunately unavoidable and are not a sign of poor quality, but uniqueness.

<h3><b>Can I take the "Nala" backpack, olive-green, on the airplane?</b></h3> <p>This backpack meets the dimensions set by common airlines and the IATA. The rolltop backpack is the ideal carry-on for almost any mode of transportation.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Is the "Nala" backpack, olive-green, rigid or rather soft?</b></h3> <p>Our canvas backpack is classified as soft luggage and is partially made of soft cotton-canvas in olive-green. Therefore, its shape changes slightly depending on how full it is. The advantage is that the vintage backpack can be more easily stowed away if not needed. We consciously avoid using plastic lining in our bags that would make them rigid.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Is the canvas "Nala" backpack, olive-green, waterproof or water-resistant?</b></h3> <p>The backpack is made of canvas and leather, designed after the classic mountain or hunting backpacks of the 19th century. To be as authentic as possible, we use only materials that were available 100 years ago and largely avoid plastics and chemicals. Unfortunately, our standard canvas rolltop backpack is neither waterproof nor water-resistant. However, our bags can withstand a brief rain shower. Alternatively, the rolltop backpack can be impregnated against moisture.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Can the "Nala" backpack, olive-green, be made waterproof afterwards?</b></h3> <p>The backpack can easily be impregnated afterwards using a commercially available and colorless waterproofing spray (e.g., Impru00e4gnol). Alternatively, you can also use a waterproofing wax (e.g., Dr. Gee's Waterproofing Wax). Please note that the color and texture of the bag may change as a result. It's best to test the waterproofing on the back side first.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>How can I clean and maintain my "Nala" backpack, olive-green?</b></h3> <p>We believe that a vintage-designed backpack should show signs of intensive use. That's how it should be. If you still wish to clean your bag, we recommend three steps:</p> <ul> <li>Remove dust and dirt particles from the backpack, e.g., with a brush or handheld vacuum.</li> <li>Gently dab and rub out stains with a clean and damp cloth. If the stains are persistent, you can try a gentle soap solution.</li> <li>Occasionally lightly grease the leather (e.g., leather care with beeswax or carnauba wax). Take care not to hit the canvas to avoid stains.</li> </ul> <p></p> <h3><b>What type of leather is used for the "Nala" backpack, olive-green?</b></h3> <p>We exclusively use vegetable-tanned, full-grain buffalo leather for the backpack. The particularly robust leather comes from India. During production, our leather is additionally hand-finished with a colored carnauba-based wax, giving it its special vintage patina. It harmonizes perfectly with our cotton canvas.</p> <p> </p> <h3><b>Where and how is the "Nala" backpack, olive-green, produced?</b></h3> <p>Our goods are made in India. Our manufacturer is a small family business whose long-time employees make our bags with a lot of heart and passion. Our long-term cooperation has grown into a genuine friendship. The production conditions are socially acceptable and comply with BSCI standards. We regularly verify this in person. Our leather and cotton fabrics come directly from local sources in India. The dyes used for our cotton fabrics are free from AZO colors. Our leathers are basically vegetable-tanned, meaning they are tanned based on plants and without the use of aggressive tanning agents. Our standards are socially and ecologically justifiable and above average. However, our aim is to continue to work on ourselves and further improve our ecological and social "footprint."</p>




Our leather production is LWG certified

Our leather tannery is certified to the LWG standard and we use only vegetable tanning agents for tanning. The Leather Working Group (LWG) is an initiative to make conditions in tanneries and intermediaries more transparent and to bring about sustainable change. To implement its goals, the Leather Working Group has developed an audit protocol for sustainable and responsible leather production.
